Fun in the Sun: Summer Safety Tips & Tricks

As summer arrives, many of us are ready to break out our swimsuits and enjoy classic warm-weather activities such as tropical vacations and backyard grill outs. Have fun this summer and play it safe by following these quick tips:

  1. Calling all Aquaholics- Cooling off in the pool is a great way to regulate your body temperature, exercise, and stay cool. However, make sure to know when to call it quits. If you can tell that you or someone around you is getting tired, take a break! Be sure to bring and wear life jackets as necessary and always swim with a buddy.

  2. Stay Shady- Just a few serious sunburns can increase you and your child’s risk of skin cancer later in life. Their skin needs protection from the sun’s harmful ultraviolet (UV) rays whenever they’re outdoors. Be sure to cover up. Clothing that covers your and your child’s skin helps protect against UV rays. Reapply sunscreen (SPF15 and higher) as needed, and try to avoid scheduling outdoor physical activities during the hottest part of the day (between 12 – 4 pm)

  3. Listen to Your Thirst- Staying well hydrated helps reduce the risk of heat-related illness. Try to drink an 8 oz glass of water every hour if you’re outdoors- add a lemon for flavor to improve taste!

  4. Don’t let mosquitoes and ticks bug you- Protect yourself and your family by preventing bites and diseases, like Zika, West Nile virus and Lyme disease, which can be transmitted by insects. Apply insect repellent liberally (on your clothing, NOT your skin), check yourself and your children for ticks, do your best to clear out standing water, and fix any broken screens in your home.

Enjoy your summer with activities such as picnics, get-togethers, travel, gardening, and new experiences, and remember to stay safe!
